Abstract

This study investigated the Principals’ quality assurance competencies in the management of public secondary schools in Ebonyi state. The study was conducted using descriptive survey method. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study was 443 principals of public secondary school in then system. The entire population which was made up of 221 senior secondary school principals and 222 principals of junior secondary schools were therefore used as the study sample. Instrument for data collection was questionnaire. 391 correctly completed questionnaires representing 88.3% were returned and used for the analysis. Mean scores and standard deviation were used to analyse the data and answer all the research questions and achieve the specific objectives of the study. The result of the study shows that principals of public secondary schools in Ebonyi state possess enough quality assurance competencies for personnel management; have high level of quality assurance competencies for managing instructions; finances and information and technology. The implication of the study is that if conducive teaching and learning environment is created in the public secondary system in the state, the principals would perform creditably well. The study recommends that there should be regular training of secondary school heads and creation of conducive school environment to maintain high standard of performance.
