Abstract
Dyspepsia is a common clinical problem. For patients with alarm symptoms prompt endoscopy is advised .In patients without alarm symptoms western guidelines suggest an age threshold of 50 -55 years for endoscopy as malignancy is uncommon in younger patients. This retrospective study looks at the yield of endoscopy in uncomplicated dyspepsia and prevalence of malignancy in different age groups. Clinically significant endoscopic findings were found in about a third of patients and 3.9 had malignancy. Age threshold for initial endoscopy in Indian patients should be lowered to 40 years.
