Abstract
PATTERN AND SEVERITY OF ADVERSE DRUG REACTION OF ANTI-ASTHMATIC DRUGS PRESCRIBED IN MEDICINE OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL OBJECTIVE To study the pattern and severity of adverse drug reactions of anti-asthmatic drugs in patients attending Medicine out- patient department in a tertiary care hospital.METHODOLOGY The study was conducted in adult patients with Bronchial Asthma attending Asthma outpatient of a tertiary care hospital between August 2013 to October 2013. Study period was 3 months. Sample size was 500. After getting approval from the Institutional Human ethics committee, 794 prescriptions were screened, 500 prescriptions that met the inclusion criteria were chosen for analysis. Adverse Drug Reactions (ADR) were documented in WHO ADR reporting form. Causality assessment of the ADR was done by WHO causality assessment scale. Severity was assessed using Modified Hartwig Siegel severity assessment scale.RESULTS Most of the patients were in the age group of 61-70 years. Males constituted 34 percentage and females 66 percentage. Beta 2 agonists were the most commonly prescribed antiasthmatic drug group. Adverse Drug Reactions were more common in elderly females. Tremor was the most common Adverse Drug Reaction encountered. Most of the ADR comes under possible category of WHO causality assessment scale and were mild.CONCLUSION Beta 2 agonists were the most commonly prescribed anti asthmatic drug group. 34 percentage of patients encountered Adverse Drug Reactions. Adverse Drug Reactions were more common in elderly females. Tremor was the most common Adverse Drug Reaction encountered. Most of ADRs were mild and comes under possible category of WHO causality assessment scale.
