Abstract
Despite its significance, the conception of national role and role behaviour has not been given due attention within the theory of international relations. However, the role invests a country’s foreign policy with purpose and content and serves as guideline for decision-making. In this article the major theoretical approaches to the role category are considered, and the relationship between the role behaviour of a state and its foreign policy is indicated. Based on the analysis performed, the features of maintaining national roles by modern states are revealed.
