Abstract

The article shows the process of reflection at the turn of XIX?XX centuries clergy its mission in socie- ty. Authors on the basis of archival materials and memoirs of graduates of theological seminaries analyze at- tempts to train in the middle of the XIX century. Future priests the basics of medicine and agriculture, as well as the attitude of the society to this experience at the turn of XIX?XX centuries. The article demonstrates that the level of teaching these disciplines represent a mosaic picture. Pupils themselves remembered these lessons as an interesting, but not serious subjects. The article concludes that the introduction of these subjects in the course of theological seminaries were unsuccessful way to solve social problems. The real added value they brought. However, this experience was actively discussed in the early twentieth century in the discussions on the ways of spiritual school reform
