Abstract

Indonesia, as an archipelago country, is blessed with a diverse ethnic culture both minority and majority. “Klenteng” (temple) is known as a worship place for the community of Chinese descent, which is categorized as minority in Indonesia. Though the numbers of Chinese descent in Indonesia is not that signi cant, they are scattered all over the Indonesian archipelago. Along with the Indonesian government decision to allow Chinese-related culture, customs, beliefs and practices, “Klenteng” becomes more exposed and is gaining more popularity. “Klenteng” would attract people curiosity with their chanted ritual prayers, the display of worshiped Gods and Goddesses and beautiful design both the exterior and the interior. Such attractiveness has also encourage people to know more, further explore and to a certain extent investigate the meaning, the story and the history behind. From the perspective of exterior building which rst sight to be seen, the facade and the roof of “Klenteng” are very interesting to be further deep-dived to disclose the meanings and stories, as well as the application of wide variety of ornaments. Qualitative method was applied in this research. This includes eld studies, observation, documentation and interview. The study is expected to be useful for architecture design related to meaning of the ornament and the decoration of the roof. Aesthetical exterior design value plays very important role to become tourism attraction asset. How “Klenteng” applies the esthetical elements for the exterior and the decoration is surely very interesting to be scientifically explored.
