Abstract
The use of recycled materials as concrete ingredients has been gaining popularity recently. The increasingly stringent environmental legislations have also made it necessary to use Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs). The use of these materials reduces the amount of resources required and also improves the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. The current study involves the investigation of strength development characteristics of concrete modified with GGBS as partial replacement of cement and concrete modified with GGBS and metakaolin as partial replacement of cement. A comparison between the properties of binary and ternary concrete with the same percentage replacement of cement is also carried out. The results show that, for strength properties optimum percentage replacement for binary concrete is found to be 60%, and for ternary concrete, it is found to be 5% metakaolin replacement. Generally, from strength studies, binary concrete shows better results than ternary concrete.
