Abstract

The main historical periods of the formation and development of media education in the educational system of Canada on the basis of socio-economic, scientifically and technical and cultural-educational development of the society as the leading criteria of the periodization are defined in the article. The first period of the development and formation of media education in the educational system of Canada is considered in detail and characterized. The three main stages of the first period of the development of media education in the educational system of Canada, namely: the emergence of the foundations of media education in Canada; the formation of the system of media education and intensive development of the process of media education integration in the secondary and high schools in Canada are revealed. The factors which led to the emergence of media education in the educational space of Canada are selected and reviewed. The influence of the intensive American "pop culture" expansion of the Canadian society and tolerance and progressiveness of the education system is characterized in the article. The development of media education in the 21st century is supported by such influential international organization as UNESCO is stated. The results of the study will form a systematic picture of the process of the origin and formation of media education in the educational space of Canada and can be used in the process of developing the special educational and methodical literature, special courses and training programmes on media education and the history of media.
