Abstract

Private letters - an important source for researchers. They carry great scientific value. They are especially valuable for studying the heritage of famous historical figures, because the letters are often cultivating thoughts that sometimes are not embodied in the scientific works. This essay offers to immerse into private correspondence of two famous personalities of the nineteenth century - Yakiv Holovatskyi and Olexander Dukhnovych who lived and worked in Galicia and Transcarpathia respectively Ukrainian regions that were part of the Austrian Empire. The purpose of the article is to show and to document the source value of epistolary heritage and by analyzing the correspondence between Y. Holovatskyi and O. Dukhnovych, to show the ways of cultural unity of Ukrainian lands. The author offers a description of correspondence between scientists, subjects of it, for the establishment of private co-operation and cultural development. The archives are the subject of special scientific value. The authors of the studied letters discussed extremely important issues, such as magyarization of intelligentsia of Transcarpathia, the influence of polonization on public life in Galicia and, as the consequence rapid spread there russophile sentiments. In the analyzed letters we find a lot of information that were proof of the existence of close contacts on both sides of the Carpathians; correspondence between people of Transcarpathia and Galicia to certain extent revived culture and education in the Region.
