Abstract

The author deals with various D. I. Yavornytsky's intellectual contacts at the period of 1920 – early 1930's. This prominent historian's scholarly and educational activity is being studied with the method of network analysis. This approach allows us to simulate his intelligent network and recreate its vertical and horizontal structure. During that period D. Yavornytsky's research and educational activity was connected with Ekaterinoslav (after 1926 – Dnipropetrovsk) Institute of Public Education. Under Yavornytsky's guidance, Ukraine History Department of Ekaterinoslav Institute of Public Education became an important intellectual center to research and teach Ukrainian history where horizontal (among colleagues) and vertical (between teachers and students) intellectual ties were being developed. In 1920's – early 1930's. Yavornytsky's research and academic network was not limited only by the Ekaterinoslav / Dnipropetrovsk region. The historian kept important intellectual communication with Ukrainian scholars who were from Sloboda, Left Bank, Kyiv, Volhynia and Podolia regions, as well as those who were from South of Ukraine. The author studies how the intellectual circle, represented the core of Yavornytsky's research and education network, was purposefully destroyed by the communist totalitarian regime in late 1920's – early 1930's. D. Yavornytsky's followers, former students and like-minded historians from different regions of Ukraine suffered from political repressions.
