Abstract

In the article international practices of social work with refugees have been highlighted. The activity of international organizations (United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, International Organization for Migration, UNESCO, International Red Cross Committee, European Council on Refugees and Exiles, etc.) that significantly influence the development of international approaches and standards of social work with refugees and displaced persons have been characterized. Main directions and forms of social work with refugees have been defined. Peculiarities of skills training of social workers working with refugees at universities of the USA and Canada have been determined. Thus it can be argued that in the USA and Canada the process training of social workers to work with different groups of clients (also to work with refugees) has a multi-level character; is based on the concept of life-long learning and the principles of consistency, continuity, consistency in the implementation of content and technology; is characterized with the interdisciplinary approach and partnerships with social agencies. It has been found that both countries shared basic principles inherent in the training of social workers to work with refugees, due to specific social work professional competence requirements for professional and vocational caused specialist personal qualities (self-control, capacity for empathy, lack of prejudice against members other cultures, tolerance, lack of ethnic and racial prejudices, etc.). In the process of training of future social workers we focused on the scientific and practical aspects of their training to work with refugees and immigrants; mastering social technologies "intervention" situation in life and studied categories of clients; management of social work with refugees. An important aspect of the training of future social workers to work with refugees is the training for the cross-cultural interaction. The main objectives of intercultural training are: to familiarize participants with cultural differences in interpersonal relations by means of playing situations in which something happens differently in the two cultures; the ability to transfer acquired knowledge to new situations.
