Abstract

Urban areas, both in developed and in developing counties, are characterized by the highest population density and consequently they highest pollutant emission, traffic congestion and lower welfare. Two thirds of the European people live and produce in urban areas, and for this reason, the cities have to be more and more "smart" in addressing emerging problems of sustainability, accessibility, social equity, inclusivity, efficiency. These are the reasons why, in recent years, the urban areas have showed the need to have more planning and management tools to find innovative energy solutions, intelligent and shared transport systems, water and waste management with the aim of supporting a sustainable urban development in term of a wider livability for all citizen as well as for the different categories of transport users. In 2014, by the development and the formalization of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) (Wefering et al.[1]), great social innovation and encouragement in applying new planning methods were given to local authorities.
