International Standards for the Quality of Library-Information Service

Abstract

Іn the context of the development of the information society, the task of improving the quality of library and information services acquires a special social significance. In the paper the main provisions of international standards in the context of quality assurance of library services are considered. Quality of library work could be understood as maintaining orientation on users’ interests and constant satisfaction of their information needs in accordance with scientific, educational and cultural demands, improving of library services. Consideration of the main provisions of international standards in the context of quality assurance of library services has revealed the need to establish a quality management policy for library-information services based on the principles of the Total Quality Management System (TQM) (Total Quality Management). The publication examines the requirements of standards for the library and information services, and determines the components of the culture of service. For effective implementation of high-quality library services in libraries, a comprehensive study is needed to determine the needs, interests and requests of real and potential users. Gradual introduction of the newest methods of evaluation e-resources and e-services of libraries, the organization of library statistics and measurement of quality and efficiency, the influence of libraries in the context of international standards will facilitate the integration of Ukrainian libraries into the European community, the consolidation of society and the long-term success of the Libraries.
