Abstract

The article raises the problem of the educational potential (effective linguodidactic capabilities) of modern information technologies (IT) in teaching English to students in higher education in the context of the digitalization era of higher education. The author focuses on the key advantage of IT – the ability to implement student-centered learning. The relevance is due to the fact that modern education is faced not only with traditional academic training, but also with the provision of deeper knowledge and skills in using technologies for communication, information retrieval, and further the ability to solve problems and work in a team. The author described the educational potential of modern information technologies in teaching English to students. The main linguodidactic possibilities of using IT in teaching English are theoretically substantiated. To the main modern linguodidactic opportunities of information technologies, which form their educational potential, the author includes: a qualitatively new organization of students' independent work with an emphasis on creative search, self-study and activation of cognitive activity; convenience and comfort of the learning process (a significant part of the training material can be studied out of class, at a convenient time, and didactic materials are available on the Internet at any time); flexibility and variability in choosing an individual student learning path; almost unlimited potential of the teacher's creative pedagogical search in the formation of copyrighted teaching materials, courses, models and other materials.
