Abstract

Lubricative properties of oil strongly depend on its rheological properties. It was believed that adding nanomaterials such as aluminium oxide nanoparticles to lubricated oil will result in changing of rheological properties of the oil. This paper reports the study on changing of rheological properties of lubricated oil under the effect of aluminium oxide nanoparticle. In this research, aluminium oxide nanoparticle (80 nm in diameter) was added to commercial lubricative oil (BP Vistra, supplied by Vietnam National Petroleum Corporation). Then the rheological properties in general and dynamic viscosity in particular of aluminium oxide nanoparticle added oil and original oil had been carried out at different aluminium oxide nanoparticle concentration and different temperatures. The result of experiments indicated that aluminium oxide nanoparticle has strongly changed the dynamic viscosity of oil; this changing is function of both aluminium oxide nanoparticle concentration and temperature. The result of experiments also demonstrated that there is a range of aluminium oxide nanoparticle concentration and temperature where aluminium oxide nanoparticle added oil has advantage (dynamic viscosity) rheological properties for lubrication.
