Abstract

Composite Materials are a class of materials that are custom developed to provide better strength based on the need of the customer. The major application of composite materials finds inaerospaceapplications. However, in any field of engineering, failure is a critical factor and needs a better understanding of how these effects can be reduced. In the caseof aerospace engineering, failure may be due to the impact caused on the structures. Due to this phenomenon, damage tothe composite structure is an important area and several researchers have worked extensively to find reasons and effects of various parameters that lead to the failure of composites due to impact. Further, special emphasis on lowvelocity impact is gaining prominence, since; it is a grave threat to the aerospace industry and damage caused due to this cannot be seen by the naked eye. This paper focuseson the effect of various failure modes and factors influencing the damage and possible ways to reduce the impact damage of composite materials, which can in turn enable better service life of the component
