Several new hitherto unreported penta-coordinate tris (& alpha; -naphthyl) - antimony (iii)& antimony (v) halothiocyanato, Interpseudohalide, Interhalogen of the general formulas (& alpha; -Cless thansubgreater than10less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than7less than/subgreater than) less thansubgreater thannless than/subgreater thanSbXless thansubgreater than3-nless than/subgreater than and (& alpha; -Cless thansubgreater than10less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than7less than/subgreater than) less thansubgreater thannless than/subgreater thanSbless thansubgreater than5-nless than/subgreater than (n=1, 2 where OOCR = Cless thansubgreater than6less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than5less than/subgreater thanCONHCHless thansubgreater than2less than/subgreater thanCOO-, Cless thansubgreater than6less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than4less than/subgreater than (OH) COO-, Cless thansubgreater than6less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than5less than/subgreater thanCless thansubgreater than2less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than4less than/subgreater thanCOO-, (Cless thansubgreater than6less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than5less than/subgreater than) less thansubgreater than2less than/subgreater than (OH) C. COO, etc. X=halogens) have been prepared by the metathesis reaction of (& alpha; -Cless thansubgreater than10less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than7less than/subgreater than) less thansubgreater thannless than/subgreater thanSbXless thansubgreater than3-nless than/subgreater than with the appropriate metals salts of the carboxylic acid. The halothiocyanate derivatives were also obtained by the addition of the tris (& alpha; -naphthyl) -antimony (iii)& antimony (v). The newly synthesized compounds have been characterised by conventional methods. The failure to replace the second halogen atom in (& alpha; -Cless thansubgreater than10less than/subgreater thanHless thansubgreater than7less than/subgreater than) less thansubgreater thannless than/subgreater thanSbXless thansubgreater than3-nless than/subgreater than may be attributed to steric hindrance offered by the naphthyl groups bound to antimony as well as the bulky nature of the organic ligand.
