Abstract

The preservation of water quality is a major challenge not only for the sustainable management of the environment but also for that of biodiversity because of the strong and increasing human pressures that are exerted there. In the process of bio-monitoring of our aquatic ecosystems, a study was conducted in the Affon River in Benin. The purpose of this study is to present the benthic invertebrate biodiversity of this river. The purpose of our work is to establish a complete list of invertebrates that colonize this environment. In addition, our study focused on benthic macroinvertebrates in order to contribute to the framing of biodiversity and a specific catalog of benthic macrofauna in Benin. Sampling of these macroinvertebrates was done according to the IBGN standard in 8 stations along the river. A total of 11, 220 individuals belonging to 4 major classes, 54 families and 13 orders. The class of insects was best represented 94.17 % with several orders including Ephemeroptera 4.30 %, Heteroptera 1.21 %, Odonata 4.859 %, Lepidoptera 0.11 %, Trichoptera 8.0 %, Coleoptera 1.01 %, Diptera 74.61 % and Plecoptera 0.09 %.
