Abstract

Blockage accumulations upstream and through culverts cause an increase in the upstream water level and the downstream scour (depth and length), which can lead to structural failure. the purpose of this study was to carry out experimental runs using horizontal flume in the water resources and hydraulics laboratory of the faculty of engineering, Shoubra-Benha University. To investigate the effect of blockage on water surface profile for free flow through the culvert. Four culvert contraction ratios (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%), three discharge (20.81, 36.76, 51.28) LPM, and blockage ratio (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%) were used to meet this purpose. for given culvert contractions and discharge, the results show the blockage ratios as a significant effect on the formed water surface profile upstream, though, and downstream of the culvert. Computation of a water surface profile for the culvert is essential to determine the increase in water depth.
