Abstract

Introduction. Surnames are an integral part of language and they are the focus of attention of many linguists. There is a significant amount of research on Ukrainian surnames and various aspects of the origin, structure and functioning of Ukrainian surnames. English surnames have also been extensively studied in various aspects of their existence. A comparative analysis of Ukrainian and English surnames can lead to interesting results and will serve as a basis for further research in this area.Purpose. The article aims to an analysis of the etymological sources and morphological analysis of the Ukrainian and English surnames and makes a comparison of these aspects in the two languages. Methods. The article applied the following methods of investigation: historical research, exploratory and confirmatory research, non-experimental research applied method, qualitative research, correlational research, and descriptive research. Results. The obtained results of the research consist of the comparison of the etymology and morphology of the Ukrainian and English family names in one investigation. It was found that the English surnames have longer history compared to the Ukrainian ones. The sources of forming the surnames in both languages have much in common but the morphological means of the Ukrainian language make the variety of Ukrainian surnames much richer. Originality. The research is made independently and based on numerous reliable academic sources. Conclusion. We can talk about the similarity of the sources and processes of the formation of surnames in the Ukrainian and English languages. At the same time, the beginning of the formation of the base of surnames in the English language took place much earlier, which can be explained by different political realities on the territory of these countries. The political situation caused the appearance of a significant number of anthroponyms- neologisms in the Ukrainian territory during the era of the Soviet Union at the beginning of the 20th century. Regarding morphological processes in both languages, a significant influence of the type of language (synthetic or analytical) on the peculiarities of the formation of surnames is observed. The mostly synthetic Ukrainian language turned out to be much more productive in the formation of surnames using various word-forming elements from one lexeme. Thus, it can be argued that Ukrainian and English surnames have a lot in common both in their etymology and semantics. At the same time, it is possible to single out significant differences in their functioning. Prospects for further studies of anthroponyms lie in the quantitative analysis of the database of such vocabulary. In addition, the study of certain regional features of the etymology and morphology of anthroponyms can be of interest to both specialists and a wide range of readers.
