Sound sleep is essential for physical, mental & social wellbeing of each individual. People are suffering from a number of sleep disorders like dyssomnias, parasomnias and the circadian rhythm sleep disorders. Untreated sleep disorders have been serious consequences. Ayurveda has explained a brief approach to sleep for the healthier life. In physiology, as a part of homeostasis, different systems like, Digestive system, nervous system, hormonal, metabolism etc., have an impact of sound sleep on them. Insomnia or disturbed sleep imparts ill effects on these systems, Ayurveda has already mentioned them. So preventive measures for better sleep should be implemented as early as possible. The Ideal sleep, which should be prescribed in relation to individual’s circadian rhythm in each case of insomnia or metabolic disorders along with medicines and diet, is explained. So for longevity and youthfulness of life, as we consult diet, it is also necessary to advice the sleep in the regime form.
