Abstract

Herpes simplex virus is ubiquitous, enveloped and double stranded DNA, which belongs to the family of herpesviridae and consists of more than 80 distinct types of viruses that are found in nearly all kind of animals. Herpes simplex virus-1, herpes simplex virus-2, herpes zoster virus, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, human herpes virus-6, human herpes virus-7 and human herpes virus-8 are pathogenic to human. The eight human herpes viruses are occurring either asymptomatic or symptomatic in the form of fever and rash of skin or mucous membranes. After primary infection, the virus becomes latent in ganglia. Most common diseases caused by herpes simplex viruses are acute gingivostomatitis, genital, labialis, ocular, congenital and neonatal. The herpes simplex virus can be prevented and treated by antiviral agents, boosting immunity system of the host, reduce exposure to immune suppressing agents and natural remedies of vitamin C, zinc ions, vitamin E, adenosine mono-phosphate, lemon balm and restrict taking refined sugars. In this paper herpes simplex vurses and their mode of transmission, treatment and prevention mechanism was critically reviewed in order to create awareness for the welfare of the society.
