Artistic fabrics in the decoration of Aron Kodesh in the Eastern Halychyna in the XVIII - the first third of the XX centuries

Abstract

This article analyzes the artistic features of fabrics of the XVIII - the first third of the XX centuries, which were traditionally used for the decoration of Aron Kodesh in the temples of Halychyna. The aim of the article is to analyze the coverings to save the Torah scrolls in ? Torah mantles, curtains of the central niche ? arch curtain, and the ending - kapporet. It was also found that the creation of these monuments was carried out in accordance with the sacred texts of the Torah and recommendations of the leading thinkers of Judaism. To create them some expensive, often imported from leading textile centers of the Middle East and Europe fabrics were used: velvet, brocade, silk, satin. The basic techniques of decoration were sewing, embroidery using silk, gold and silver threads. Among the main reasons of decorating were vegetable ornaments, images of symbolic animals as well as the Star of David, a crown, temple attributes. Most attractions of Halychyna are stored in the numerous museums all around the world, private collections and they still have not become the subject of a separate scientific research; that is what determines the topicality of the article.
