Properly emphatic ?(one)self?

This article observes the properly emphatic word ?(One)self? as the core means of the functional and semantic category of Self in the Russian language. In the present article the properly emphatic word ?(One)self? is analyzed in the emphatic context. The emphatic intonation is discussed in the sentences of various types. It is stated that the intonation serves as a prototypical indicator of the emphatic rheme in a narrative sentence. The sentences with the emphatic ?(One)self? have two types of realization: in the narrative sentence the word ?(One)self? is unstressed, whereas in an exclamation sentence it is stressed. The analysis shows that in the interrogative and narrative sentences the interpretation of the word ?(One)self? is explained not only with the interpretation of the emphasis but also with the defi nition of the communicative contrast
