Abstract

Husameddin Ali al-Bitlisî, is an estimable yet relatively unknown scholar of the east who lived in the era of Aq Qoyunlu State. His name is rather mentioned in the texts where his son, İdris-i Bitlisî, is written about. Husameddin Ali al-Bitlisî has spent a considerable amount of his life in Tabriz and built a dervish lodge there; especially worked on spiritual/ethic guidance and education. He is a dedicated follower of Noorbahshia sect which is one of the branches of Qubraviyyah all of which are Islamic religious orders and he is among the leading disciples of Sayyid Muhammad Nurbakhsh. Bitlisî was promoted to the caliphate position of the sect and he was effective in prevalence of the Nurbakhshi sect in Qurdistan and Luristan and he died on 909/1504. He compiled texts that contain philosophy and sufi contents and discussed the levels of being (ontology) and the process of being insan- ı kâmil (the perfect human) (psychology). One of the unknown but important representatives of Muhyiddin Ibnu'l-Arabi school, Husameddin Bitlisi's treatises reveal that he was also impressed by Shehabeddin es-Suhreverdi. His every single treatise has great significance since they collect diversified scientific cultures, especially his commentary on the Holy Quran, Jamiu't- Tanzeel wa't-Ta'weel, is among the most important ones. This one is of philosophical/sufic kind and unknown to Islamic community of erudite. In addition, it has not been subject of any significant academical study as well as his other studies. All the manuscripts of author that have been discovered are located in various libraries in Turkey. However, there are hardly any studies on such an important scholar and the existing ones fail to include his life and scholarly character. This study, therefore, is on the name and family line of Husamettin Ali al-Bitlisî, as well as his political, scholarly and spiritual life, and death; on his teachers that are known and his manuscripts in brief.
