Abstract

This paper not only investigates the first four verses of Surah al- Mujadila in the axis of struggle given by Khawla bint Thalaba, but also makes the assessment of woman in this context. Khawla is a companion, who has been exposed to zıhâr by her husband. Zıhâr is a form of divorce that is based on ignorance custom and leads to great victimization against woman. This event occurs with the sentence of “You are like my mothers' back” and is an application which does not allow woman to return her husband or to make another marriage. This ignorance custom, which exposed women to great difficulty, has been removed after Khawla was not satisfied with the answer of Prophet Mohammed and notified her complain to Allah. The first four verses of Surah al-Mujadila were revealed because of this reason and the name of Surah was also sure to mark this event. According to this Surah, zıhâr is not a shape of divorce. It is an outrageous and baseless promise that requires expiation. How the incident occurred, dialogue between the Prophet Mohammed and Khawla, and her invocation, practice of zıhâr and its results are among the subjects of this study. The first four verses of Surah al-Mujadila were examined within this context. Words/concepts located in verses were discussed within this subject and finesse in style was given. Social aspects of expiation options were specified and it has been emphasized as an event to protect women's personality/identity. Struggle of Khawla, being a symbol woman who made her words heard by Allah, is subjected to different readings and evaluated in this article. Attitude displayed by Khawla, shows many respects to the interlocutor of the revelations and so should be explained to people on various platforms. al-Mujadila is not only a Surah that keeps the memory and struggle of Khawla alive, but also a role model which shows woman not to stay indifferent to actual practices against women.
