Abstract

The detection of the psychological elements in a literary text and the application of psychoanalytical approach onto it has begun with Freud; and has been elaborated by others in the course of time. The psychoanalytical method of criticism that has been improved under the auspices of Freud examines the effects of the artist's psychological life and the subconscious on the work s/he creates. Throughout the study the poems by Omar b. Abī Rabi‘a, lived during the Umayyad reign and was regarded the master of love-poets both in his lifetime and later, has been pschoanalytically anaylysed. Poem itself is a means that can shed some light on its author and his/her age. In his lifetime there witnessed a great deal of development in Mecca and Medina, economically, culturally and socially; and there was a considerable amelioration in public welfare. As a direct consequence of this state music and poetry gained more publicity and got farther from earlier patterns applied before. In line with these social changes/developments “woman” secured more role and place in literature. Since he was brought up in a “high-bred” milieu Omar ibn Abī Rabī‘a, thanks to his charm and lyric poems, was at the centre of ladies' attention and attraction. He recited poems in societies that attended also by the ladies. Due to the fact that he was the leading personality of “ode of lust”, the main theme in his work was “woman”. Omar was a sort of narcissist poet. He was fond of their attraction offered for his self and poetry; his love for them was not a real one. In this paper I have tried to detect the narcissistic elements in the poetry of Omar ibn Abī Rabī‘a, a great megalomaniac.
