Abstract

Muhammedu'l-Emîn eş-Şınkîtî (d. 1974), in his epistle written under the name of “Men'u Cevâzi'l-Mecâz fi'l-Munezzeli li't-Te‘abbudi ve'l-İ‘câz”, denies the existence of some types of the art of Bedî' through art of figurative speech, whose existence in the Quran was discussed before him, from the point of view ofIbn Teymiyye (d. 728/1328) and his pupil Ibn Kayyım el-Cevziyye (d. 751/1350). In order to prove the existence of figurative speech in the Quran, many articles and works have been written in Turkish. Therefore, this article does not aim at the refutation of the use of figurative speech in the Quran. However, existence of arts such as Mubâlagha, Tajâhul al-‘ârif, al-Qawl bi'l- mûjeb, and Rojou (revocation), which are included within the scope of Bedî, which eş-Şınkîtî denies with his philosophy of rejection of figurative speech, in the Quran has been detected; moreover, existence of these arts has been tried to be proved through discussion. The Quran which addresses every community and period of time should be considered as a masterpiece which would act as a main source for the Arabic language and its eloquence with its language and style, its original and dynamic sequence and phonetic structure. This is partly due to the literal devices used in the text. eş-Şınkîtî's evidence to prove his thesis that there is no hyperbole in the Quran and the consequence of rejecting all art forms in the Quran are based on loose reasoning. It is far from convincing the reader, it is weak in proving its point and at some points it is even inconsistent.
