Abstract

M. Cevdet İnançalp (1883-1935) is mostly known as “Muallim Cevdet”. He is a Turkish archivist who is famous with his studies on Akhism. He initiated an attempt on Ottoman archive documents were sold to Bulgaria (1931) as scrap paper. This is also an event which brings his name so often to the agenda. Through this attempt, important steps have been taken towards the preservation of archive documents in Turkey. The report about this topic sent to İsmet Pasha is famous. In his report, he strongly emphasized the importance of subject. The studies that started in this direction are the first studies on State Archives in Turkey. Some documents in the Archive of the Türk Tarih Kurumu (Turkish Historical Society) contain details of the subject. These documents first make Muallim M. Cevdet's efforts in this area visible. At the same time, the contribution of the Türk Tarih Kurumu (Turkish Historical Society) in this area is also becoming clear. Our study is based on six documents in the TTK (THS) Archive. At the end of the article, the facsimiles of these documents are given additively. The first document dated 1931 is a printed report sent by Muallim M. Cevdet to Ismet Pasha. The report was written right after the Ottoman Archive documents were sold to Bulgaria. At the same time, this report shows all the clarity of M. Cevdet's sensitivity to the subject. The second document is dated 1934. It shows the interest of Türk Tarih Kurumu (Turkish Historical Society) in the subject. The third document and the fourth document annexed is about first studies of the TTK and Muallim M. Cevdet in the area of archiving. Particularly fourth document shows how Mehmed Cevdet is closely acquainted with the Turkish archives. It also contains recommendations for the protection of archive documents. Fitht and sixth documents dated 1935 show the attempt that Muallim M. Cevdet initiated has been progressed. According to the documents, the Turkish Historical Society supported the first studies in the area of archiving. This is the result of Muallim M. Cevdet's efforts. He was one of the essential members of this institution (society). Thus, he has been appointed by TTK (THS) as head of the committee of organizing archive documents. The report he wrote with this title led Prime Ministry State and Ottoman Archives to be configured. This report has been a reference to be considered constantly.
