Abstract

The article is devoted to the problems of terminological polysemy in scientific and technical texts. The development of science and technology calls for special terminology to consolidate new concepts. Understanding new terminology and the ability to convey it to the Ukrainian language in today's euro-integration process intensifies the value of translation. This fact caused the relevance of the proposed research. The term refers to a semantic unit with a certain fixed technical concept, which can change its meaning (content). This concept, in its turn can vary depending on its use in a particular scientific and technological area. Extending an existing word semantics aside its new terminological significance is associated with the phenomenon of polysemy. The given in the article examples show that the terms are not identical in meaning in different fields of science and technology. The attention is focused on the difficulties in polysemous terms' translation. The most difficult are: 1) different meanings of the term within one area; 2) in the technical literature common words may obtain specific terminological meaning; 3) translation of scientific and technical definition of a word (phraseological unit) and multi-terminological idiomatic phrases; 4) literal translation. So terminological polysemy problem in the translation of scientific and technical literature is among the most complex and least developed in the context of modern scientific, technical and economic processes, this problem becomes significant and requires further development.
