Abstract
The question of the extent of the historicity of one of the first Kievan princes – the legendary Askold. Taking into account a historiography legacy an attempt was made to verify the chronicle reports about the activities of the Prince, based on the short-term eastern sources. It is concluded that the comparative analysis increases the chances of a series chronicles reports Askold led by the state association for plausibility. Terms at which this historical character can be examined as a commander of the hired varangian detachment on service of the Kievan prince Dir are hypothetically reconstructed. The done conclusions can serve an additional and ponderable argument at the analysis of norman theory of creation of the state of Ancient Rus'.
