Abstract
This paper represents a corpus-based review of semantic and pragmatic features of Japanese adverb markers of conditionality. Our analysis points at a complicated, non-linear distribution of the features marked by them (some crossing areas) including hypothetical character, (low)probability, (un-)desirability, necessity of condition or independence thereof. Special attention is paid to some traces of interlinguistic influence (particularly Sino-Japanese) in the formation of discursive qualities of the adverbs.
