Abstract

In present study various solvent extracts of leaves have been used for comparative study of Woodfordia fruticosa and Catharanthus roseusn for their natural bioactive compound, antioxidant properties and ant ibacterial properties and were confirmed by TLC. Here Chloroform extracts was found to be effective solvents for alka loid and terpenoid, Methanol was for flavonoid and tannin and aqueous extract was found to be effective solvent f or cardiac glycoside and saponin. The results also revealed th at Woodfordia fruticosa leaves extracts has higher percentage of tannin (1.496%) as compare to Catharanthus roseus wit h value (0.693%) whereas antioxidant property of Wo odfordia fruticosa was poor (1.1 μmole/ml glutathione) in c omparison with Catharanthus roseus (25.09 μmole/ml gl utathione). Antimicrobial assay showed that methanolic extracts o f Woodfordia fruticosa in comparison with Catharanthu s roseus were more effective than other solvent extracts with (14mm/9mm, 19mm/4mm, 17mm/8 mm, 11mm/9mm) zone of inhibition against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginos a respectively. This comparative results obtained in the present st udy would be useful option for future drugs discover ies to cure various diseases.
