Abstract

Background. Patient education is essential part of patient management in heart failure along with optimal medical therapy to improve survival as well as the quality of life. The aim of the research was to assess awareness of patients with stable coronary heart disease and chronic heart failure about clinical manifestations, dietary recommendations, lifestyle modification, and pharmacotherapy in heart failure. Material and methods. One hundred fifty six patients (mean age 64.5 [55–70] years; 59% males) hospitalized due to decompensated chronic heart failure took part in a questionnaire. The education module “Connaissance Action Santé" (France) was used. The latter includes 60 questions and situational cases on various aspects of chronic heart failure. Results. The percentage of correct answers among the respondents was 65 (60-68)%, and it differed significantly (p<0,05) between patients depending on their functional class of chronic heart failure. Conclusions. 1. The results of the survey indicate a low level of awareness of patients about the symptoms, recommendations for lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy in chronic heart failure. 2. The lower level of awareness of patients is associated with higher functional class of chronic heart failure.
