Abstract

Sets the sequence of the main facts of the biography of Nikolay Vasilyevich Kovalevsky, which are relevant to the formation of his socio-political outlook. Indicates that democratic views and active participation N. Kowalewski in the student's period of activity of the Kiev community complicated getting young men of higher education due to persecution by the authorities. There is active participation N. Kovalevsky in the major events organized by the Kyiv «Old Hromada» in the 1870-ies. In 1875 and 1876 Kovalevsky was a member of the «Committee of 12» «Old Hromada», who was involved in the organization of Ukrainian publishing houses outside of the Russian Empire. At meetings of the committee, he kept the radical-democratic views and advocated for the provision of M. P. Drahomanov broad support in the political propaganda of the program of the Ukrainian community movement. Underlines the importance of material and organizational and practical assistance M. Drahomanov, as the «Old Hromada» in Geneva, supported by N. Kovalevsky. Contents of socio-political activities N. Kowalewski during their stay in Odessa in 1878–1879 years. As part of a particular group, which included Odessa and Kiev "hromadovtsi", he took an active part in the organization of illegal printing-house with the purpose of issue of the Ukrainian propaganda and agitation literature. Covers events connected with the arrest and subsequent administrative link N. Kowalewski in Eastern Siberia (1879–1882). It is alleged that after returning from siberian exile, N. Kovalevsky continued its activities in the "Old Hromada", remaining faithful companion and successor of M. Dragomanov. In 1883 N. Kovalevsky supported the attempt of Malevannyi to create the Ukrainian social-revolutionary party of socialists-Federalists, – the Ukrainian political society "Free Union". It is alleged that the reason for the exit N. Kowalewski from the «Old Hromada» was the disagreement with the decision of its leaders refused to continue the financing of publishing activity M. Dragomanov having a political character. It is noted further cooperation N. Kowalewski with M. Drahomanov and the circles of the Ukrainian democratic youth, public figures in the Russian-Ukrainian radical party in Galicia. N. Kovalevsky played a prominent role in the socio-political movement of Ukraine 60–90-s of the XIX century, as one of the representatives of social-democratic trend in the Ukrainian «narodovlastie». His practical activities N. Kovalevsky contributed to the spread of the ideas of M. Dragomanov in Ukraine, formation of national consciousness of the Ukrainian people.
