Abstract

Manufacturing and using of synthetic dye for batik application have a negative impact on health and environment. Alternative solutions to the problems is using natural dyes that is easy, safe, and fast processing as the dye from red yeast rice. Red yeast rice produced in rice medium. In this study, we try to find alternatives media to replace rice, by jicama tuber and corncobs then evaluate the characteristics and quality of the resulting dyes on cotton fabric. Jicama tubers and corn cobs using as the growth media for Monascus purpureus for 21 days, then characterized absorption properties, functional groups, concentration, and coloration properties on cotton. The results showed that jicama tubers and corn cobs have the ability to use as manufacturing media of dyes with maximum absorption at a wavelength of 500 nm. Dye functional groups leads to structures Monascus red dye. Dyes concentration owned by jicama tubers was 13.43% and was 7.46% for corn cobs. Color produced on cotton dyed using the dye extracts of jicama tubers and corn cob media evaluated with the value of K / S respectively 1.218 and 0.677.
