Abstract
This article is dedicated to the study of life and work of Conrad Hermann, a German philosopher of language of the 19th century. General questions of linguistics of that period are under consideration in the article, among them the questions of historical linguistics and philosophy of language. The article is based upon the works on history of linguistics, upon archival information from the city of Leipzig and its university and upon the works of C. Hermann, “Philosophical Grammar” in particular.
