Abstract
The article is devoted to “Le peintre anglais au Salon”, an example of French art criticism on the Salons, i. e. biannual exhibitions organized by The French Academy of Painting and Sculpture. Taking into consideration Hogath's famous “Analysis of Beauty” and Reynolds' “Discourses” an unknown author of “Le peintre anglais…” offered a survey of generalized British approach to the French art and underlined some distinctions and peculiarities of two national artistic traditions. As the unique writing of this kind in French “Le peintre anglais…” was intended to promote mutual understanding between two cultures conciliating French and British intellectuals.
