Abstract

Japanese linguists classify onomatopoetic vocabulary according to associative, structural and semantic features. This article is devoted to the problem of semantic classification of the Japanese onomatopoetic words. There are different classifications that categorize the onomatopoietic lexicon of the Japanese language from a semantic point of view. They are similar in that they divide the onomatopoeia into two main groups: giongo (on- omatopoeia) and gitaigo (sound symbols). There are a lot of the polysemic onomatopoeic words have character- istics of different subgroups, the classification in question does not fit them
