LANGUAGE PERSONALITY OF A LITERARY TRANSLATOR: JAMEY GAMBRELL

The article analyses publications of a famous American translator of contemporary Russian literature Jamey Gambrell in the framework of the theory of language personality, as well as the theory of stratification of the translator's language personality. The professional characteristics of the language personality of a literary translator are studied on the verbal-semantic, linguo-cognitive and motivational levels. J. Gambrell's interviews given to famous journalists and literary critics are analysed as her self-reflection that allowed formulating a set of principles describing the approaches to the translation of the texts of fiction. They are the principles of the writer's activity, of the balance of analytical and heuristic approaches to translation problem solving, of the translator's communicative activity, of the phased translation text production, of the translation variety, of the relativity of the translation losses. The comparative analysis of the culture-specific words and neologisms studied in the original text as well in the English translation of T. Tolstaya's collection of short stories and her novel Slynx supports the viability of the principles. Gambrell's interpretive position determines the system of selecting language means in the translation.
