Abstract

Thromboembolism, or clot formation in blood vessels, can occur both in the arter- ies and in the veins. Venous thromboembolism of the pulmonary artery is much less common in children than in adults, but is c haracterized by high mortality in all age groups. In 1845, Virchow suggested that three factors are important for the development of thrombosis: (1) impaired circula- tion (stasis), (2) damage to the vascular endothelium, and (3) changes in blood coagulabili ty (hy- percoagulation). Virchow's triad is still relevant for the etiology of thrombosis in adults and chil- dren. Among the factors predisposing to thrombosis in children, different authors indicate: the presence of a central venous catheter and improper car e for it, sepsis, disseminated intravascular coagulation syndrome, antiphospholipid syndrome, prolonged immobilization and inactivity, over- weight, cancer, nephrotic syndrome, as well as a number of other factors. The article describes the clinical observat ion of pulmonary embolism in a child with infectious endocarditis after chemo- therapy.
