THE PROBLEMS OF THE SCHOOL AND EXTRACURRICULAR EDUCATION ON THE PAGES OF THE PEDAGOGICAL MAGEZINE “LIGHT” (1921–1922)

Abstract
Introduction. The article analyzes publications of prominent Ukrainian educators and scientists (L. Biletskyy, М. Panchuk) available on the pages of Galician pedagogical magazine “Light” (1921-1922). Special attention is paid to the highlight and generalization of their views concerning the problem of organization of the school and extracurricular education for Ukrainian children and school youth in conditions of the specific sociocultural surrounding of East Galicia in 20th of the 20th Century. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to highlight the content of publications available on the pages of pedagogical magazine “Light”, which were dedicated to the theoretical and practical aspects of the problem of organization of the school and extracurricular education for Ukrainian children and school youth. Results. It was found out, that educational work was held at a low level in schools during extracurricular activities, as M. Panchuk wrote in his article. The author believes that the lack of teachers interest in creating a systematic extracurricular educational work affects the whole educational process. He considers that there is an extreme necessity in pedagogical support of club activities and what is more, it is the only opportunity to form a national outlook among Ukrainian pupils being in the surrounding of Polish school. The author of the article generalized the viewpoints of a scientist L. Biletskyy, who reflects about the problem of organization of the educational work in school and outlines the main tasks which should be solved by Ukrainian school taking into account advanced achievements in the field of theory and practice of pedagogical science. In his opinion the national idea should be a core in the system of school education, and it should be focused on the formation of the life position of a young person and the personality development, as a conscious citizen. Originality. The scientific novelty of the research results is first of all the expansion of historical and pedagogical information about the system, content, specific forms, methods and facilities of school and extracurricular education of the Ukrainian schoolchildren in East Galicia at the beginning of the 20th Century and also the reinforcement of the information about the organization of club activities for children and young people in educational institutions. Conclusions. The results of the scientific research allow us to conclude that valuable components of the historical experience were determined and they are worth to be used in contemporary conditions, in particular, the organization of educational work in school and the organization of the systematic extracurricular educational work with Ukrainian school children.
