Abstract
This paper gives an overview of the features of creative method of S.I. Taneyev as a citizen and pedagogue. In the context of pre-revolutionary Russia, a special focus is on solving deep ethical matters. These matters are of great concern to S. I. Taneyev, the outstanding musician and P. I. Tchaikovsky' favourite student, “the musical conscience of Moscow”. It is also to help students to identify the main directions for the acquisition of material on musical theory and musical history, which is not represented adequately in the curricula of a number of musical and educational institutions
