Abstract
The Distributed Flexible AC Transmission Systems (D-FACTS) devices provide a cost-effective elucidation for power flow control. It is difficult to determine the exact location and the amount of distributed compensation to be employed in the system. The optimization techniques namely Particle Swarm Optimization and Cuckoo Search Algorithms have been proposed and comparison between the two optimization techniques for reducing the system losses as a main objective has been presented. The proposed methodology has been applied on IEEE 118-bus test system to examine the use of D-FACTS devices as a means to minimize losses. The different sensitivity factors of power system quantities are studied and the effect of installing D-FACTS devices is examined. The paper presents the application of D-FACTS devices for loss minimization. The sensitivities are used further to solve the optimization problem in the form of power system control application as loss minimization.
