Abstract
Women’s economic e mpowerment is a top priority in the work to reduce poverty. Women mus t be vie wed, jus t as men a re, as economic actors as well as obvious and necess ary agents of change. There is a growing understanding that, as the world is fac ing an unprecedented economic cris is , there will be s erious cons equences for women in poor countries and their children. Thes e include higher infant mortality, more g irls being withdrawn fro m s chool, and reduced wo men’s inco me. At its heart lies the unequal nature of the economic s tructures of markets and financial s ystems which res trict wo men’s economic opportunities compared to men’s . No w a days everyone is talking about women e mpowe rment. But the question is how to meas ure wo men e mpowe rment. The paper atte mpt s to dis cus s few indicators which reflect e mpowerment of wo men.
