Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between reading strategies and success in comprehension by Iranian EFL learners of Iranian private institutes. 90 participants (male between ages 14-16) were selected in two groups. To establish homogeneity, a standard proficiency test was given to each group. 20 multiple choice items were used from 5 piloted reading texts as the pre-test and post-test. The experimental group received selected reading strategies: using context clues, guessing, skipping, skimming, and scanning, while the control group followed their usual class activities. 20 sessions of strategy instruction and practice were conducted. The results supported that direct instruction of reading strategies can help to improve Elementary EFL learners’ comprehension abilities in private institutions. The result recommended Iranian English teachers of Iranian institutes to apply reading strategies instruction to increase students’ comprehension abilities.
