Abstract

In English one finds Old English word brid which becomes bird. The same is also of Tshivenda .For example, where the word tanganedza ‘receive’ may be written as tanangedza ‘receive’. The two words have nga and na in the second sylables. The two words; though the syllables are different, have the same meaning. In spoken Tshivenda there are instances where speakers of the language consciously or unconsciously alternate the normal sequence of elements in a sentence. Sometimes those are syllables or words or other units. This paper seeks to investigate and analyse metathesis as it occurs if Tshivenda. This will be accomplished by analysing human utterances, or published and unpublished literature using the qualitative methodology because it is a type of research that refers to an in-depth study using face-to-face or observation techniques to collect data from people in their natural setting. This will assist and correct speakers of the language how words are correctly pronounced and to identify those people with speaking challenges in life.
