THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL MEDIA DEPENDENCY AND PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING LEVELS OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the psychological well-being of high school students in terms of various variables and to determine the relation between psychological well-being and social media dependency level. The study group of the study consisted of 332 (160 girls and 172 boys) students studying at various schools in Adıyaman during 2017-2018 academic year. Warwick Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, Social Media Dependency Scale and Personal Information Form were used as data collection tools. T-test and Mann-Whitney U tests were used in comparison of the two groups, and one-way variance analysis ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis techniques were used in multiple group comparisons. F statistic was used to determine the group differences. Stepwise regression analysis was used to determine the power of predicting high school students' mental well-being of social media addiction. As a result; there was no significant difference between male and female students' mental well-being; mental well-being of the students with smartphones is higher and mental well-being of the students studying in anatolian high schools is higher than the students studying in imam hatip high school. Also there was a significant negative correlation between conflict and mental well-being from the sub-dimensions of social media dependence. There was no significant relationship between emotional regulation, occupation, repetition and loneliness.
