Abstract
The article discusses the features of the John Updike's novel "Gertrude and Claudius" concerning the tragedy by W. Shakespeare "Hamlet". The problems of contrasting the characters of two literary compositions, and the specificity reflection of the well-known events through the prism of perception of different generations are considered.
