Abstract

A Rammed-earth structure is a monolithic construction made by compacting processed soil in progressive layers within a rigid formwork. As an environmentally friendly construction technique, modern rammed earth gaining renewed attention due its ease in construction, economical and sustainable alternative to concrete. It also provides better insulation and have tremendous impact on environmental especially in variation of climate and global warming. In this study, locally available non swelling soil is used for investigation and the suitability of industrial waste that is fly ash and the construction waste is studied. Cement-based composite blocks are prepared, the properties of cement stabilized and unsterilized Rammed earth blocks were studied with respect to the density and compressive strength in both cured and uncured condition. The study shows that, fly ash and construction waste can be used effectively for Rammed earth construction. An increase in the compressive strength of rammed earth blocks with an increase in the percentage of cement. The average characteristic strength of cured samples is about two times higher than uncured samples. From the study it is observed that the cement stabilized blocks with sufficient curing produced good alternative material which can replace the conventional building units effectively.
